ARTIST STATEMENT:
My artwork is the cumulative effect and expression of varied interests and passions in a range of activities and medium. As an artist, I work predominantly as a printmaker and painter. It is difficult to deny the influence that travel, literature, graphic design, photography and even the culinary world has on my artwork.
Much of my work concerns itself with the convergence and collusion of East and West. Not just in the sense of Eastern culture versus or merging with Western culture, nor merely the conflicts, cooperation or conversations that evolve, but in a larger sense with the ideas of that which we term foreign and familiar, the concepts of homeland and family, identity, self-definition, societal structures and roles of influence, authority, and the sense of coexistence and belonging.
Even in more iconic work I typically focus on personal connections, psychology, emotional undercurrents and the life paths and cultures prescribed for us and those which we ourselves further define, follow or depart from.
For nearly as long as I have been engaged as an artist, I also have been working professionally as a designer. I embrace the dichotomy that is working as both commercial and fine artist. I do not sense a contradiction, nor do I feel bashful to admit my interest or devotion to either. They serve different desires and purposes for me and others. One is the articulation of personal insight, observation and emotion, the other the visual and conceptual expression of needs, identity and offerings of others.
