DEGENERATE!

On Feb 22, 1997, GalleryInsekt opened the "DEGENERATE!" show, highlighting the work of fifteen Boston-area artists. This group show was a collection of expressionistic, controversial, and compelling works of art. The exhibit was meant to be a reference to the 1937 Munich show "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art.) The fifty-some works in the show were hung in a manner resembling the presentation of the Nazi's show intended to ridicule some of the most innovative and expressive modern artists of the day. The DEGENERATE! show at GalleryInsekt was a celebration of the survival of experimental and expressionist art.

The opening featured three short films-- two by Ben Cunningham, and one by Lisa Bufano, a poetry and fiction reading, five short experimental music pieces coordinated by Ross Hamlin, a quick but shocking performance stunt involving an SS officer and two soldiers, and lastly an hour of Swing dancing.

Approximately three hundred people attended the downtown opening, packing the loftspace gallery on Kingston Street.
