GalleryINSEKT HISTORY

Gallery INSEKT was an alternative, experimental artspace in Boston between 1996 and 1998. In the course of a two year time span, Gallery INSEKT provided a variety of exhibitions, installations, performances, and special events with artists and performers ranging from Cambridge Massachusetts, to Athens Georgia, and all the way from Frankfurt Germany. Many of the artists that exhibited at Gallery INSEKT previously never had a solo exhibition. It was a primary intent of the gallery to provide an outlet and stage for new, promising artists, local and distant, in a city that had few such unconventional venues. Gallery INSEKT also worked in connecting, networking, and collaborating with artists and exhibition venues in other cities such as San Francisco, New York City, Providence, and Philadelphia.

In addition to exhibits and special events, Gallery INSEKT regularly held figure drawing and painting open studio sessions, Film screenings for emerging experimental filmmakers, and functioned as a meeting space for artists.

Gallery INSEKT was featured in various publications including the San Francisco alternative arts magazine, Juxtapoz (Fall 1998) The Boston Globe (Living Arts, October 18, 1998) and The Improper Bostonian. Gallery Events were also often attended and documented by The Boston Phoenix, The Boston Tab, and The Boston Herald.
